What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Sarasota Non Surgical Face LiftThere are numerous reason individuals turn to cosmetic dentistry. Some want to look younger, and cosmetic dentistry can immediately remove years of wear and tear from your smile -comparable to a dental facelift. The majority, however, have always had unattractive teeth and as a result have felt self-conscious about smiling. These ones finally want a smile that reflects the true warmth of their personality.

Modern dentistry offers a wide variety of treatment options for those seeking to enhance their smile. The options range from porcelain veneers to braces! In many cases, a combination of these techniques is required to deliver the best results.

Drs Morris and Bakke can explain the many different techniques available and what they can achieve. If you are wondering about what cosmetic dentistry can do for you, please call, and continue reading about the various options below.

Porcelain Veneers

Sarasota porcelain veneersSarasota porcelain veneersPorcelain Veneers are custom-made porcelain wafers that are placed over the fronts of the teeth to enhance their appearance and also to repair damage. These veneers can dramatically change a smile, boosting self-confidence. They can solve a variety of cosmetic dental issues. They can close gapped teeth, whiten discolored teeth, straighten a crooked smile without braces, repair chips and other flaws. Tey will just create an overall more attractive / youthful-looking smile. More . .

Tooth whitening

Sarasota porcelain veneersSarasota porcelain veneersTooth whitening is the single most prevalent dental cosmetic. Over time, the tooth enamal can be stained by the foods we eat or smoking. There are many store-bought varieties available to treat this, but the results of these can't compare with those available in the dental office. Peroxide-based materials are used to whiten teeth. There are in-office treatments and at-home whitening systems. Do be aware that before a tooth whitening procedure the patient must get all cavities filled, and the gums must be healthy. The in-office systems use 35% hydrogen peroxide gels coupled with a high intensity light to whiten the teeth. Sometimes, the gums need to be protected while the gels are placed on the teeth. A laser or plasma arc light source activates the peroxide which oxidizes the stains on the tooth surface. In about an hour, the teeth become four to six shades lighter.

At-home systems most often use 10 to 20% carbamine peroxide gels to oxidize stains. Impressions molds are made of the mouth to create soft mouth trays. A thin ribbon of the gel is put into the tray and the tray is worn while sleeping. Usually the tooth whitening will take one to two weeks. There have been difficult cases where trays may need to be worn for up to six weeks. Often a combination of in-office and at-home systems will achieve maximum results, and routinely achieve between 12 to 15 shades of whitening. When monitored by a dentist, the procedure is safe , and does not damage the tooth in any way. More . .

Tooth-shaping

Tooth shaping involves removing a small amount (generally 1 to 2 millimeters) of the enamel of the teeth. Tooth shaping can shorten long teeth, round off pointed teeth, and help create a pleasing smile that gently follows the contour of the lower lip. The procedure is quick and painless (the enamel has no nerves), and is usually completed in less than 30 minutes. A small minority of patients gets slight sensitivity after tooth shaping. This can be remedied with prescription strength fluoride or in-office desensitizers. The procedure does not appear to cause any long-term damage to the teeth.
