Dr. Burr Bakke Attends Symposium on State-of-the-Art Surgical and Prosthetic Strategies

Feb 1, 2018

Dr. Burr Bakke, a dental implantologist and co-owner of World Class Dentistry in Sarasota, recently attended the Full Arch Immediate Reconstruction Pikos Symposium Nov. 2-4, in Orlando.

A new technique was one of the focal points during the symposium. Dr. Bakke is among those at the forefront on this cutting-edge smile restoration procedure, having spent the past 14 years, using state-of-the-art technology to create custom smiles for his patients.

Through the use of fully guided surgery, a 100 percent restorative process, Dr. Bakke is able to give his patients a new fixed set of permanent teeth the same day of surgery.

The one-of-a-kind program featured 16 of the world’s Master Clinicians, who shared their surgical and restorative protocols for full arch immediate reconstruction with clinicians from 41 states and seven countries.

During the symposium, clinicians advanced their knowledge of the latest dental trends, techniques and clinically relevant and evidence based state-of-the-art surgical and prosthetic strategies for full arch immediate reconstruction.

“It was nice to see people from all around the world, how they do it and to get their slant on things,” said Dr. Bakke. “There are always new devices and ways to do anything better. We’ve been doing this new top-of-the-line procedure for almost a year now. It’s just an incredible technique for patients that accomplishes amazing results.”

Prior to the conference, on Nov. 1, Dr. Bakke participated in several pre-conference hands-on workshops, including the All-on-4 Treatment Concept: A Surgical-Prosthetic Blueprint for Success and the Zygoma Implant Treatment Concept.

A cost-efficient technique, the All-on-4 treatment concept provides patients with a fixed full arch set of implants in a single day. Patients can choose from three to four different techniques, depending on how much bone and permanent teeth they may have.

“There are several ways to do these that fit within a lot of budgets,” said Dr. Bakke.

During the Zygoma Implant Treatment Concept workshop, Dr. Bakke learned about the latest form of dental implant surgery in which the implant is placed into the cheekbone from inside the mouth. The technique is particularly pertinent to patients that have dentures and not enough bone to place a traditional implant.

“It’s designed for patients who have very little bone left in their upper jaw,” said Dr. Bakke. “When you wear dentures for years and years, you lose bone overtime. This technique uses a longer implant.”

The majority of the denture population is unable to chew food well enough to fully break it down. As a result, the food isn’t fully absorbed when it hits the stomach, producing intestinal issues as well as other diseases, such as IBS, ulcers and intestinal problems.

One of the primary ways to alleviate the issue is by giving patients a fixed permanent set of teeth they can chew with.

“Having dentures is like being in wheelchair,” said Dr. Bakke. “Would you want to spend your life in wheelchair if you could get a new pair of titanium legs, get up and walk around? It’s the same idea with your teeth. If you can’t chew and taste just because of your dentures, why wouldn’t you want to make a change?”
